This time of year is so beautiful, but it's not enjoyable for those who experience sinus stuffiness, itchy eyes and sneezing. Experiencing these symptoms constantly is miserable. There are several things you can to do make it easier to spend time outside enjoying the warmer weather.
1. Change your clothes after being outside. Pollen sticks to fabrics easily. After enjoying the outdoors, change your clothes as soon as you come inside to minimize the spread of pollen within your home.
2. Wipe down your pets. Take a damp paper towel and wipe down your dogs and cats once they come inside. It's amazing what their fur can pick up. I had a black cat named Mac who loved to roll around in dirt (he was unique). I'd wipe him down every time he'd come inside and I was always amazed at the amount of pollen that clung to the paper towel.
3. Use window filters. They're not the most attractive, but these filters allow fresh air into your house without the pollen! We use these found on Amazon. Again, they're not super attractive, but it's really nice to breathe fresh air at night while sleeping.
4. Use a neti pot. There's been some concern about neti pots spreading infection. Be sure to wash your neti pot thoroughly after every use and only use distilled water. Using a neti pot with sea salt and distilled water helps clean the nasal passages of pollen and draws out excess sinus fluid, which can help relieve sinus pressure.
5. Use local honey. Growing evidence questions the validity of local honey's effect on allergy symptoms, but some people swear by its effects. Honey is made from pollen that bees carry. Allegedly, consuming that pollen in the form of honey helps the body to create antigens that can help fight the effects of pollen on the body. Those who feel this helps recommend only taking a teaspoon a day to experience the benefits. The more local the better as the bees are sourcing the same pollen that's affecting you.
6. Take a trip to the beach. Salt air does wonders for the sinuses. It's worth taking a day trip to find some relief!
7. Get acupuncture. Acupuncture can help boost the immune system and relieve sinus pressure. Some people need treatment once a week during allergy season but for others only one or two treatments can do the trick.
